Sophomore Pilgrimage

Chairman: Vicki Beilke

Sophomore Pilgrimage is an annual event sponsored by the Nebraska Federation of Women’s Clubs (NFWC) for over 30 years, when high school sophomores spend a day at the Nebraska State Capitol. The purpose of the program is to create interest in and educate the students about Nebraska Government.

The event is an opportunity for students to meet and hear from the elected state officials. The Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Auditor and Treasurer inform students about the duties and responsibilities of their office and answer questions from the students and sponsors. They also hear a presentation in the State Supreme Court Room explaining the state court system, visit the Unicameral in session and have lunch with their State Senator at the Governor’s Residence.

Each student receives a packet containing information about the Senators, Unicameral, Legislative Process as well as a certificate and group picture.

Club Presidents will receive detailed information and the registration via email or regular mail in January after the Legislature convenes. The date varies from year to year depending on the legislative session and availability of the Governor’s Residence. It usually is held the last week of March or the first week in April.

Each NFWC Club can sponsor two (2) sophomores (male or female) from a high school in their area. The club contacts the school counselor or social studies department who selects the students(s) and arranges absence from school. A completed registration form and $25.00 fee for each student must be sent to the state chairman at least two weeks before the event. The sponsoring club is responsible for arranging the transportation of the students(s) to Lincoln and back to their homes.

Sponsors are welcome to have lunch for $10.00 with the group, if space is available. The reservation and fee must be sent in with the registration form. Sponsors can be club members, parents or school staff. Participating clubs may report this project under Civic Engagement and Outreach or Education and Libraries under GFWC Community Service Programs BUT NOT BOTH.

Your club can provide a unique experience for a sophomore student(s)! You may contact the Sophomore Pilgrimage Chairman for more information.
